It costs nothing. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes to set up correctly. And when properly optimised, it generates a measurable stream of calls, direction requests, and website visits every month without a rand spent on advertising.
Yet most South African small businesses either have no profile at all, or have one that is so incomplete it might as well not exist.
This guide walks you through every step: from creating your account through to video verification, choosing the right categories, writing your description, uploading photos, managing reviews, and running the ongoing monthly routine that keeps your listing climbing in Google Maps rankings.
"Open Google Maps on your phone right now and search for what you do plus your suburb, for example 'plumber Kimberley' or 'dentist Verwoerdpark.' If you are not in the top three results, this guide is for you."
What Is Google Business Profile and Why Does It Matter?
Google Business Profile (formerly called Google My Business) is a free platform that allows businesses to manage how they appear on Google Search and Google Maps. Your profile displays your business name, address, hours, phone number, website, photos, reviews, services, and posts.
It is the entity Google uses to decide whether to show you in the Local Pack, the three-business map that appears at the top of search results when someone in your area searches for what you do.
Ranking Weight
GBP signals account for 32% of Local Pack ranking weight, making it the single largest ranking factor in 2026.
Visibility Boost
Fully optimised, verified profiles appear 80% more often in search results and generate four times more website visits than incomplete or unverified listings.
Without a verified and optimised GBP, you are invisible to most local mobile searchers in South Africa.
Before You Start: What You Will Need
Before beginning the setup process, have the following ready:
- ✅ A Google account (Gmail address) that you will use to manage the listing permanently
- ✅ Your exact business name as it appears on your signage
- ✅ Your physical street address or the service areas you cover
- ✅ Your South African mobile or landline number
- ✅ Your business opening hours for each day of the week
- ✅ At least ten high-quality photos of your business, team, or work
Step 1: Go to Google Business Profile and Start Your Listing
On your computer or mobile device, go to business.google.com. Sign in with the Google account you want to use to manage the listing. This should be an account you control permanently, not a personal Gmail you might lose access to.
Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signage and official documents. Do not add extra keywords to your business name such as "Joe's Plumbing, Best Plumber Kimberley." Google's AI enforcement is stricter than ever in 2026, and keyword stuffing in your business name is a violation that can result in your listing being suspended.
Step 2: Choose Your Business Type and Location
Google will ask you to select a business type. Choose carefully here. A recent update to the verification process asks business owners to clarify their business model before proceeding. Selecting the wrong option, particularly "online-only," may lead to compliance issues.
- If customers visit your physical location: Select "Storefront" and enter your full street address.
- If you go to your customers: Select "Service area business" and enter the suburbs, cities, or regions you serve.
- If both apply: Select "Storefront" and then add a service area as well.
Step 3: Choose Your Primary Category
The Most Important Setting
Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals in your entire Google Business Profile. Switching a law firm from "Law Firm" to "Personal Injury Attorney" can change Maps visibility more than any other on-profile edit. Choose the narrowest accurate category.
Pick the most specific category that matches your primary service, not the most general. A dentist should choose "Dentist" as primary, not "Medical clinic." Look at the top three ranking businesses in your suburb and match their primary category.
Step 4: Add Your Contact Details and Website
Enter your South African phone number using the correct local format. Ensure this number matches exactly what appears on your website and all other online listings. NAP consistency (Name, Address, and Phone number) across every platform is critical.
Step 5: Verify Your Business
Verification is non-negotiable. Without it, your profile will not rank at all. It signals to Google that you are the legitimate owner of the business and unlocks all the management features you need.
In 2026, video verification is now the default for most new business listings in South Africa. Video verification typically takes 3 to 7 working days in SA.
🎥 How to complete video verification:
- You must use the Google Maps app on your mobile device, logged into the same Google account that manages the Business Profile.
- Tap "Get verified" on your Business Profile, then select "Business video" and tap "Next."
- Be physically outside your business before you begin.
- Your video should show three things in a single continuous take: your exterior signage or building front, your interior premises, and a management action such as unlocking the door with a key.
- Aim for 60 to 120 seconds.
Step 6: Write Your Business Description
Once verified, return to your profile and complete the business description. Use the full 750-character allowance.
- Opening sentence: State exactly what you do and where you are located. This first sentence is what AI Overviews use to extract your business summary.
- Body: Include your primary keyword naturally once. Mention two to three secondary suburbs or areas you serve.
- Closing: End with what customers can expect from working with you.
Step 7: Add Your Services and Pricing
Use the Services section to list every service you offer with a brief description and a price. Pricing transparency builds trust and helps you rank for service-specific searches. For consulting or quote-based work, use "From R500" rather than leaving the price blank.
Step 8: Upload Your Photos
Photos are one of the most impactful elements of your GBP, yet they are also the most neglected. Profiles with professional photos receive 35% more clicks than those with amateur or stock images.
Exterior & Interior
Photos showing your signage, street view, entrance, reception area, and treatment rooms.
Team
Real photos of your staff at work. Authentic faces build trust far more than stock images.
Products or Work
Photos of actual deliverables, completed projects, or stock items.
Behind the Scenes
Photos showing your process, equipment, or team in action.
Step 9: Set Your Opening Hours Correctly
Enter accurate opening hours for every day of the week. If your hours vary on public holidays, update them in advance using the "Special hours" feature.
Step 10: Activate the Q&A Section
Do not wait for customers to ask questions. Proactively add the questions your customers most commonly ask, along with your own answers. Examples: "What areas in the Northern Cape do you serve?", "Are you POPIA compliant?", "Do you accept WhatsApp enquiries?"
Ongoing Optimisation: GBP Posts & Reviews
Google Posts are mini updates you publish directly to your business listing. A steady flow of Posts tells the algorithm that your profile is actively managed and your business is trading. Aim for at least one post per week.
Reviews are the third-largest factor in Google's Local Pack ranking. Review velocity beats raw review count. A steady flow of reviews over 90 days ranks better than a sudden burst of 50 reviews followed by silence.
Common GBP Mistakes South African Businesses Make
-
❌
Keyword stuffing the business name Adding keywords to your business name is a spam violation.
-
❌
Choosing a broad primary category "Healthcare" instead of "Dentist" significantly hurts your local ranking.
-
❌
Uploading stock photos Generic images reduce trust signals. Upload real photos of your premises.
-
❌
Not updating hours during load-shedding A customer who arrives at a closed business will leave frustrated.
How Long Before Your Profile Starts Ranking?
By day 30, expect to see three to ten new reviews, 30 to 100 profile views per week depending on industry, and your first Local Pack appearances for low-competition searches. By day 90, expect steady Local Pack visibility for your target keywords.
